Taekwondo for Children

Taekwondo (跆拳道) is a Korean martial art and the national sport of South Korea. In Korean, tae (跆) means “to strike with foot,” kwon (拳) means “to strike with fist,” and do (道) means “way.” Taekwondo may be loosely translated as “the way of kicking and punching.” Taekwondo is known for its emphasis on kicking techniques, which distinguishes it from martial arts such as karate or kung fu. The rationale is that the leg is the longest and strongest weapon a martial artist has, and kicks thus have the greatest potential to execute powerful strikes. But Seidokai Taekwondo puts equal emphasis on both punching and kicking. Taekwondo is used by the South Korean military as part of its training. Today Taekwondo is one of the world’s most popular martial art in terms of the number of practitioners, and it has been a Summer Olympic event since 2000. Seidokai Taekwondo class not only provides unique physical training with a belt system, but also stresses the important point that learning and studying martial arts is essentially philosophical and spiritual training. Students are exposed to the fundamental concepts of oriental martial arts and they experience the immense potency and potentiality of martial arts. It will lay a great physical and mental foundation for students’ future experience with a wide range of martial art styles and with a variety of athletic training.
